The Becoming Goth Toolkit

First of all, what does it really mean to be goth? Is it a state of mind or a state of dress?

Well, according to this “Goth Primer” a lot of it has to do with being depressed and celebrating the dark recesses of the human psyche. But do you need to wear the costume to be goth? YES. YOU MUST WEAR THE GOTH COSTUME TO BE GOTH. If you do not, you are not goth. There are many types of goth, however… and here they are: romantic goth, mopey goth, fetish goth, perky goth, raver goth, goth geek, vampire goth, pagan goth and ren faire goth. Phew… that’s a lot of goth. A friend of mine and I have come up with the following new goth hybrid: THE GOTH COWBOY. We are still working on the schematics for this one.

So now we know more about what it is to be goth, now we need to externalize our new appreciation for the morbid and tragic. So everyone go fetch your goth name. Mine is Vampire’s Vanity. I guess that makes me a vampire goth… ?

Now, to look the part. Here is how to apply your goth makeup

Now what is left? Well, you have to make people believe you are goth. And the first moment you open your mouth, the other goths will know that you are not a real goth. That is, unless you can talk the talk. Now, everyone, go to the Random Goth Lyric Generator and learn the vocabulary of gothdom.

Now, for the final exam… The Final Goth Exam. Did you pass?

If you did, then you are ready to head out into the world, now a goth with a depressing lease on life. There are many groups on facebook, for you to join to meet other goths. In fact, there are 500+ facebook groups that appear when I search goth. Find the one that is right for YOU. (see types of goth above to discover what is right for you according to your style of dress and philosophy, which coincidentally always coincide with each other).
